Norway keeps a pretty low profile. It’s high on many quality of life indices, but you don’t really see them swaggering around bragging about it. We spent about a week in Norway, mainly on the west coast. Our destinations included:
Flam, a lovely little town on the fjords, where we took a Zodiac tour while swaddled like eskimos, walked around soaking up the atmosphere, and took a fun day trip to Gudvangn, a Viking settlement recreation that had us throwing axes like a boss while talking like characters on Prairie Home Companion.
Bergen, the most beautiful hillside city ever,* home of the UNESCO heritage Breggen wharf, some fantastic parks, including one that puts the “fun” in funicular, spectacular views galore, and terrible Mexican food (but their Ethiopian makes up for it!)
*Sorry, San Francisco—you’ve slipped to number two. In so many ways. ;-)
